How to Manage Holiday Stress

The Holidays can be a stressful time for anyone. With travel, family and social engagements, house guests, shopping and a million other to-dos, the holidays can be overwhelming for many. But for Seniors, the holidays can bring additional stress from multiple travel plans, an uprooted routine and even seasonal depression.

Here are some helpful tips to help keep holiday stress to a minimum for your senior loved one.

  • Set realistic goals
  • Keep set schedules
  • Keep expenses to a minimum
  • Plan appropriate activities
  • Keep friends or family around

Holiday Safety for Seniors

Trees, lights, and candles an important part of holiday traditions but pose a danger when not used safely.

Tree and decoration tips:

  • Buy and artificial tree that is labeled “fire resistant”
  • Place trees away from fireplaces, vents and radiators
  • Use only noncombustible or flame resistant decorations

Lighting tips:

  • Make sure extension cords are rated for the intended use.
  • Turn lights off before going to bed or leaving the house
  • Before using, check lights for cracked sockets, damaged wires or loose connections

Candle tips:

  • Keep burning candles within sight.
  • Keep candles away and out of reach of small pets and children.
  • Always use non flammable holders
